Il divino Claudio
Sunday 14 May 8.00pm
All Saints′ Church, Weston Green, Esher, Surrey KT10 8JL (view map)
Claudio Monteverdi’s employers considered his music so fine ‘they not only paid, but thanked him too’ and his contemporary musicians coined the soubriquet il divino Claudio. Who are we to disagree?
We don’t know exactly when Monteverdi was born, but we do know that he was baptized on 15 May 1567. As it was customary at that time to baptize children when only a day or two old, we may well be performing Monteverdi’s music on his 450th birthday. The chance to do this will happen only once, and we simply cannot resist the opportunity.
The programme will include another opportunity to hear us perform a number of motets, including Cantate Domino, Rutilante in nocte and Christe, adoramus te; his Magnificat in four parts; and the Gloria from one of his masses. A group of his madrigals – considered revolutionary at the time, and still very striking – act as a taster for our forthcoming ‘Roads as yet untravelled’ concert, and Lauda Jerusalem from his famous 1610 Vespers aims to whet your appetite for our performance of this spectacular collection of vocal and instrumental music in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary in November.
The concert will start at 8.00pm, last approximately an hour and will be followed by wine and cake!
Admission free. There will be a retiring collection in aid of the church’s re-wiring fund.
