The tradition of composition of music for the Blessed Virgin Mary is rich, varied, and as long as the history of western music itself.

Composers are drawn to an ever popular body of texts whose intimate drama is that of the self-sacrifice and unknowable mystery of the virgin birth; and that Mary herself does not share our foreknowledge of the Crucifixion and her despair at the foot of the cross inspires the deepest, selfless and most awe-struck devotion.

From the earliest days of plainsong, through Medieval and Renaissance polyphony, right through to contemporary styles, this imagery and the bitter-sweet devotion that accompanies it has inspired composers to write some of their finest works.

Join us, as the Ripieno Choir explores the richness of Victoria’s setting of the hymn Ave Maris Stella, the extended meditation on the Angelic Salutation in Tallis’s Ave, Rosa sine spina, and the solidity and fervour of Palestrina’s double choir setting of the Magnificat, alongside the antiphon Alma Redemptoris Mater by our very own Huw Morgan.
