We are very excited to collaborate with Patrick Allies’ professional vocal ensemble, Siglo de Oro, and early music instrumentalists, Spinacino Consort, in this joyful celebration of Christmastide.
We imagine the warmth of a mid-seventeenth century London great hall, where family and friends gather for the twelve days of Christmas — a season of music, feasting and revelry. By candlelight and fire glow, voices rise in carols both sacred and secular, mingling with the lively strains of theorbo, lute, recorder, bass viol and pipes.
Our programme recreates the sounds of Christmas past, from Byrd’s serene O Magnum Mysterium and Peerson’s tender lullaby Upon my lap my soveraigne sits, to the rustic energy of Playford’s Dancing Master tunes. We meet familiar melodies in a fresh guise — The Darkest Night in December and The truth sent from above — alongside catches, rounds and Irish carols that trace the season’s joy from church to tavern.
The evening culminates in the riotous ballad Hey for Christmas, a boisterous toast to food, drink, dancing and good cheer.
Join us for a programme The Arts Desk described as “a whole lot of fun” (Wigmore Hall, 2023) as we raise our voices – and perhaps our glasses – to welcome in the New Year, 17th-century style!
